Jakestrong 5K

One of my goals during my pregnancy was to run a 5K.  It would be awesome to say I ran a half marathon while pregnant but to be honest, even with as much running as I've done in the past and currently do, I couldn't imagine trying to train and run a half marathon right now.  I mean, c'mon, I'd be stopping every few miles to pee!  A couple months back, I saw the Jakestrong 5K would be at the beginning of June in Powell and knew this would be perfect.  I figured I'd still be comfortably running and the course runs through part of my parent's neighborhood so they'd be able to cheer Todd & I on.

Pre-race

Running by my parents towards the beginning of the race....Todd is in the gray shirt & white shorts and I'm on the right side in a white hat.  Also, we ended up passing those kids during the next quarter mile...the girl was wearing Keds!

"Sprinting" to the finish

Trying to pass a few people at the end...and I ended up beating Todd

Race was a bit long and my official time was 26:00

And one more with my Running for 2 tank top

I also ended up placing 3rd in my (new) age group of 30-39 and got a $10 gift certficiate to Fleet Feet

The Stats

Mile 1: 8:11
Mile 2: 8:03
Mile 3: 8:11

Overall Time for 5K: 26:00* (Garmin read 3.2 miles instead of 3.1 miles)
Average Pace: 8:07 pace

Female 30-39: 3/25
Female: 11/94
Overall: 44/199

My goal going into the race was to break 27:00, which is around 8:45 pace.  I knew this was definitely doable with how I'd been running recently.  I also had a secret goal of wanting to place in my age group although I wouldn't really know if I had done this until after the race.  I do want to note that I wasn't running all out during this race.  I can honestly say this was the first race I've ever run where I wasn't nervous at the start line and wasn't breathless/tired during the race.  My plan was to run with Todd at a comfortable pace where I could still carry on a conversation and I wouldn't look at my pace until the mile split popped up.  I would say I was successful in my race plan because I talked to Todd most of the race and even slowed down at a couple points because I felt like we were going too fast.  I was surprised when the mile splits would beep on my watch and I felt like we were running fairly easy even at a quick pace. Being the competitive person that I am, it was a bit frustrating to see people ahead of me that I knew I could run faster than especially when they were breathing heavily and I wasn't.  With just about a tenth or two tenths of a mile left, a girl came up from behind and started to sprint to the finish.  Well, I just looked at Todd and told him I was going to pick it up a bit and wasn't going to let this girl beat me.  She didn't have much left in the tank so I easily stayed ahead of her and ended up passing another 4 or 5 people.  Unfortunately, I ended up beating Todd too.  I actually feel bad about this since he ran with me the entire race and then I took off at the very end.  He said he wasn't surprised....he knows me well!

My official time for the 5K was 26:00, which is 8:24 pace, but both of our Garmin watches read 3.2 miles instead of 3.1 miles.  I tend to trust my Garmin more than the course because I'm not sure how they measure the course so I really ran 3.2 in 26:00 which is 8:07 pace.  My Garmin is usually spot on for major races (i.e. marathons) where the course is certified.

Overall, I'm so happy with how I did and would love to run another 5K later in the summer depending on how I'm feeling.

  2. So amazing! I am impressed with your time--even when I"m not pregnant I can't run that fast. :)
