Homemade Sushi

On Sunday night, Todd invited our friends, Derek & Emily, over to his apartment for sushi. Todd & Derek had been trying to get this planned for some time and since we just found out Derek & Emily are moving to San Francisco in a couple weeks (which I'm super bummed about), there was no better time than the present.

I had heard that Derek makes some amazing sushi so I was pretty excited to see him in action. While he was prepping the ingredients, Todd hosted a beer tasting for Emily & I. Todd is trying to find a beer that him & I both like to model our wedding beer after. He bought 8 different bottles of beer and we got started on our tasting. I had to write down each beer and rank it on a scale of 1 to 5. After all was said and done, I ended up liking the first beer I tried the best, Hoegaarden.

The 8 beers in our tasting

Emily brought over Japanese candies that were delicious...we used them to cleanse our palate in between beers

Derek's plate of cucumbers, avocado, salmon, and tuna

Tempura shrimp & cucumber roll

Derek making the sushi rolls

It took Derek about an hour and a half to make all the sushi and they turned out awesome! I really felt like I was at a sushi bar because the rolls looked & tasted so good. I can't remember all the ones he made but a few of them were spicy tuna, tempura shrimp, and California roll.

Delicious (and colorful) sushi

After we ate all the sushi & had brownie sundaes, our bellies were full and we hung out watching the Golden Globes. We're hanging out with Derek & Emily again this weekend for their going away party and I really am pretty upset that they're moving. The good news is that they already know they'll be back in May and since Derek is one of Todd's groomsmen, they'll also be back in August for our wedding.

i've never made my own sushi before. you don't make it look all that hard. maybe i'll attempt it this week or weekend.

bummer about your friends moving. i know that all my friends (as well as me) will be sad when i pack up. hopefully they treat me right like you and todd did to them ;)
